Lying on the Thames at Caversham, a short walk from Reading station, ‘Boston Belle’ is a sound, traditional narrowboat which has been a liveaboard for at least the last four years. The last hull condition survey (May 2017) found the hull to be in good order, the thicknesses very good with only slight pitting in places and requiring no remedial work. The boat was blacked in May 2017 and the sacrificial anodes replaced. It will be blacked again in August. The engine is an Isuzu, which has been entirely reliable and was serviced in July 2020. The 12v electrics all work well and there are two solar panels. There are also points for 240v with a caravan-style 240v exterior socket at the stern. The gas cooker (hob + grill + oven) was new in 2015. The Shoreline 12v fridge is old, but still functional. Water is heated by a calorifier with an immersion heater which was new in 2017. There is a small multifuel stove at the front of the boat which burns well and has been the main source of heat for the current owner for 3 winters.
The bedroom is at the stern and has a 4ft double bed with room for storage underneath, a wardrobe and small chest of drawers.
The bathroom is adequate and has a shower, vanity unit with washbasin, and a portapotti style toilet. Forward of here is an open plan space with kitchen and lounge/sleeping area. Currently we have sofabeds which we convert into beds for visitors. There is very little built in furniture in the living area which contributes to the light and airy open-plan feel.
The boat is very light inside and well-insulated, with four large windows as well as portholes in the living area and a headroom of 6ft 3”. There is a side hatch by the shower room/bedroom and glass doors to the foredeck.
Boston Belle is a solid boat which has been a comfortable home for three years and with very little work will serve for many more years to come. The roof has just been repainted, but the rest of the paintwork will need some attention in the next few years. There is also plenty of scope for improving the internal fittings, and I have reflected this in the price, however she is ready to move onto straight away and there should be nothing that needs attention immediately.
Boston Belle is moored on the Thames at Caversham in a small boatyard and the mooring would almost certainly be transferable with the agreement of the owner. The boat was blacked in May 2017 and is due to come out of the water again for a hull survey and blacking at the beginning of August. The BSS certificate will be renewed at the same time, and any essential works done before craning back in.
